We are pleased to welcome Kartikaya Mohan Nagar to the IIP Academy, Noida. Kartikaya joins us as a photography educator and visual practitioner with more than a decade of experience across documentary photography, analogue and film processes, visual storytelling, commercial photography and creative direction. His approach is rooted in craft, observation and the discipline of understanding an image before making it. Formally trained in Creative Photography at the Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication, New Delhi, his practice has remained deeply connected with documentary narratives, analogue photography, darkroom processes and human-centred storytelling. As the founder of Gotama and previously Monksin Happiness LLP, Kartikaya brings extensive professional experience in photography, films, employer and brand storytelling, along with the experience of building and mentoring creative teams. At the Faculty of Fine Arts, we believe students must learn not only how to operate a camera, but how to observe, question, interpret and tell meaningful stories through images. The coming together of practitioners, educators and creative thinkers such as Kartikaya strengthens our larger vision of building an institution where traditional photographic craft meets contemporary visual practice, research and industry exposure. Today, we celebrated the conclusion of our inaugural session, led by the esteemed Veteran Photographer Jagdish Yadav. During the session, Mr. Yadav enlightened students with a comprehensive overview of the history of photography, tracing its evolution from the earliest days of film to the modern digital era. His expertise provided a unique window into the intricate development of photographic techniques and technologies. Following the enlightening discussion, students were given a practical demonstration in IIP’s state-of-the-art darkroom. Mr. Yadav showcased the use of traditional instruments and techniques, including the use of an enlarger and the D-163 processing method. This hands-on experience not only connected students with the foundational practices of black and white photography but also ignited their passion for the craft. Our students left the workshop inspired, with many expressing their intentions to delve deeper into the world of SLR cameras and film photography. Tomorrow’s session promises to further this engagement, focusing on film processing, followed by practical shooting exercises using film cameras. IIP is dedicated to fostering an educational environment where the rich legacy of film photography is appreciated and advanced.
